Later Years -- My Hope for the Nation
Jan. 23rd, 2020 01:02 pmToday is day three of Donald Trump's impeachment trial. He is the 45th president of the US. He is not the person I voted for, my vote went to Hilary Clinton. She is the wife of Bill Clinton, who was the 42nd US president. All of this is neither here nor there. It is Trump who has been a major cause of unrest in the 3 years since the electoral college put him in the White House. Hilary won the popular vote by over 3 million votes, yet the electoral college chose Trump.
Trump did not really want to be president. I have heard this many times. I don't know why he chose to run, but he did not expect to win. He is a questionable millionaire with no political experience, no military experience, and a string of failed marriages and businesses. He bankrupted a casino he owned, he started a for-profit college and caused it to fail. He has a wine business that isn't doing well and a meat retail business that went bust. This was the list of accomplishments he brought to the presidential table.
It has been debated that his mental stability is in question. He has a narcissistic personality, among other things, and is a pathological liar. He can never be wrong so he lies to rewrite his history as president. He has stolen money from his charity, paid hush money to women he has been sexually involved with, has reportedly cheated on all of his wives, and believes that since he is president, he has the power to do anything he wants regarding the US. He fawns over other world leaders such as Vladimir Putin of Russia and Kim Jon-un of North Korea. He aspires to be a dictator, I think.
This is an election year and he is running scared. He has been accused of withholding military funding to Ukraine until that country's leader dug up dirt on Hunter Biden, Joe Biden's son. Joe Biden was Barak Obama's (#44) vice predsident.
Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives on December 18, 2019. Witnesses were called to give testimony. Subpoenas have been handed out for documents from the White House and other parts of this administration and Trump and his cronies have refused to respond. The majority in the House is Democrat while the majority in the Senate is Republican. Nancy Pelosi is the leader of the House, while Mitch McConnell is the leader of the Senate.
I do not know what Trump has over McConnell or Lindsay Graham that makes them back Trump fully. I have thought many times that it is time for the US to become a bit more conservative in our beliefs. But the things I have seen during the past 3 years border on the unbelievable. In my mind, McConnell and Graham are despicable men who have put their greed for both money and power above the needs and wants of the people they were elected to serve.
All of this as a prelude of my hope for this nation.
Since Trump's election, the US has become divided. There are those who believe Trump and his minions. I have often felt that we must move away from the far left or right and become more moderate. In my mind, I see the fall of the United States Empire. Things that make news in today’s world, such as some celebrity posting nude photos of herself on social media among others, remind me of the hedonistic lives in the last days of the Roman and Greek empires. And I believe Trump is leading many Americans down that road.
Trump is a racist and misogynist. He is open about these attributes. He brags about his female conquests and makes fun of people with disabilities on an open stage. Many people have followed his lead. There has been an upsurge in hate crimes, there are people who think nothing of calling the police because a person of a different culture happens to be using ‘their’ park. They get into arguments with non-English speakers in public places. They even threaten these people with guns.
Trump is trying to commit chaos. He openly asks his followers to take out anyone who disagrees with him. He has requested that Russia do something to help him win the election in 2016, and Russia responded by hacking the election and creating bots to help sway voters.
Trump has often hinted that he should become President for Life. Far-right evangelicals have compared him to the Savior, the chosen one. It is disturbing to think that after the upcoming presidential election there is the possibility that the man who lost, Trump, may have to be physically removed from the White House. It is disturbing to know that for generations to come our Supreme Court will be filled with ultra-conservative judges, which could cause all the rights women have fought to have recognized for so many years to be taken away from them. Roe v. Wade is already trying to be overturned. Because of Trump, the truly wealthy are becoming even more so. The divide between the super-rich and the poor is widening. Men and women have to work 2 or 3 jobs in order to make ends meet. Trump and his band are trying to make cuts to Social Security, Food Stamps, and other entitlement programs so that the wealthy can benefit from tax cuts.
The nation’s farmers and small business owners are failing because of the GOP and Trump’s attitude towards them. Men, women, and children are dying for lack of adequate health care. Health insurance costs are out of sight. Big pharma is being allowed free rein as to medication costs. Fifteen years ago, a patient with diabetes might have paid $175.57 for a 20-milliliter vial of the long-acting insulin Humulin R U-500. Today, he'd shell out $1,487 for the same tiny vial, according to wholesale acquisition cost data from Elsevier's Gold Standard Drug Database.
All of these things have created a divide in our nation that will take a long time to heal. My hope is that the US can heal from all of this. My hope is that good men and women will prevail over those who put their greed ahead of their oath of office. My hope is that this period will not end in actual civil war between the Democrats and the Republicans. My hope is that overt racism and vigilantism will somehow be reined in during my lifetime. My hope is that this nation survives. 1095
