Eid means to visit. Muslims spend the month of Ramadan fasting and praying. At the end of Ramadan Allah is pleased with the people's fasting and prayers and wants them to be happy. They are to visit family and friends and share the happiness from Allah with the less fortunate, for example give to charities and to the poor.

There is a second Eid, a specific number of days after the first one. i think it's 70 days. That Eid is also a visit, it is the time for Hajj or Omri, the visit to Mecca.

Ramadan and the first Eid are always the surprise. The second Eid is a specified number of days later.
