1. The male nursing students

We were talking about the months of the year. i put the months on the board and asked them for important days for each month. Birthdays were accepted. One of the boys said his b'day was in November. He would be 19. Then when it came to December, he said he was going to be married on the 23rd. That's ok, too. They marry young in this culture. i asked if his wife was a student too. He said yes, secondary school. i swallowed hard on that one, but let it go, it's not my life or my culture. Then we got to April, and this same kid says to me that April 14th is going to be his other wedding day. Silly me, i thought there might be a religious ceremony and a cultural one. Nope, he's taking a second wife in April of next year. And his third will be before the end of 2005. Now, i was flabbergasted. i can understand the second/third/fourth wife....it is their custom, but somehow in the back of my mind, if i ever thought about it at all, i figured the men waited a few years between wives. This kid is small. Not over 5'6" and probably doesn't weigh over 120. i mentioned to Master that if he ever tried to take care of all four wives in one night it might kill him. Master said too things: A) If it did, a cement truck could run over him and it wouldn't take the smile off his face, and B) Not at 19, it wouldn't kill him.

2. An Allied Health student

This girl is a first year university student. She is married. i don't know if she has children. She is in a health field. Not medicine, a health care field. She has her period. She has bad cramps. She takes a very powerful pain killer to help control the pain of the cramps. In 5 minutes it isn't giving her any relief. She takes a second one, and then shortly after that a third. On an empty stomach. She drops dead away in a faint in the middle of class. Is out cold for a minute or two and then comes too. Gets really upset when her friend tries to call the girl's mother or husband. Gives in and says ok she won't. Before the class is over, the girl passes out again. This time takes longer to come too, and then isn't really coherent. Still refuses to let anyone call a family member to help her. Insists she is going on to math class. Then she starts seizing. Momma is called. After 45 minutes she is able to walk out of the classroom under her own steam. Where are young girls' minds? What makes them think that tripling the normal dose is ok for them? And on an empty stomach? i just don't get it.

3. On the way home

i made the mistake of staying in the office to clear up some work. i thought i had planned it right so i ould miss the crush of Kuwaitis trying to get home to sleep until sundown so they wouldn't eat. i didn't. Traffic was bad. So bad, in fact, that one driver decided that he/she (i never did see what sex) didn't want to drive on the road with the rest of us. This driver decided the emergency lane was faster. This proceeded to anger another driver in an SUV. The SUV driver decided not to let the emergency lane driver back on the road. SUV driver kept exactly in the right spot to prevent emergency lane driver from getting aback in traffic. As they sped past me going well over the speed limit of 120km/h i thought to myself this is an accident looking for a place to happen. i watched the dust fly in the air from emergency lane driver's wheels. And then i saw a cloud of smoke and dust. And all the cars in front of me put on their brakes. Apparently there was another car stalled/stopped in the emergency lane. Yep. You guessed it. i didn't stick around to see if there were survivors. i did see the SUV on its side. The emergency lane car no longer had a distinguishable front end. i don't remember the color of the stalled car. i hope no one was in it. The back end, trunk and seat were in the front.

You just don't get days like this very often.
