Another holiday with the Military
Jul. 5th, 2004 08:29 pmLast night we went out to dinner on the New Boss' buck. We went to the Crowne Plaza to the seafood restaurant for their seafood buffet. It was all the Americans who work for ALS pluss one Brit, the boss' wife who is from Thailand and is a flight attendant for Kuwait Airways, and the office manager who is not arab but i don't know for sure what her ethnicity is. Along with these people we had two military people. One, a young sgt who will be in Iraq until next May, will be working with Master at Um Qassar. The other is a colonel. She is in charge of military side of the contrast ALS is getting. She is also the one in charge of getting the Iraqi's ready to police and provide security for their own. Both seem very nice. And the colonel had nice things to say about me too.
The colonel has been married for 5 years to a Navy man. They get to see each other about 40 days a year it sounded like. She was in the Pentagon building on 9/11. She is an interesting woman, but i felt a bit sad for her. In her job in Iraq she has to be the boss. And she is mostly around men. i get the feeling she doesn't get to let her hair down very often. She nearly got misty-eyed talking about her 5-yr-old grandson. And in the next second she is talking about sleeping with a loaded weapon under her pillow. The office manager took her shopping yesterday. At dinner last night, she said she would be sleeping in silk that evening. A bundle of contradictions. She talks tough, she has promised her grandson that when she comes home for good she will stop using cursewords. But she can hold her own in any 'manly' conversation. Victor and Master both wore clothes to celebrate the holiday. Victor had on a very patriotic tie, and Master wore His Texas flag shirt.
Colonel was being silly with Victor and his tie during pictures, and then she wanted Master's shirt. Master told her He would take it off so she could wear it, and she blushed. A bundle of contradictions. i like her very much. i suggested to Master that she be invited to stay or at least visit at our place the next time she is in country. He said He plans on it. The Sgt will be coming home with Master some weekends. He is married and has a 6 yr. old daughter.
We had wine with the meal. It was wine from a box, but real wine nonetheless. The men were talking about the weekly deliveries Master and the Sgt. and the Col. could be making in the near future. Victor had a bottle of Jim Beam he had brought in from Baghdad. i could be getting beer on a regular basis. That would not be too tough to take at all.
We got home late, i didn't get to bed until after midnight, and i didn't sleep well in spite of one of mother's little helpers, because i knew i was only going to get 4hrs of sleep. Therefore, says my mind, let's wake up every 15 minutes to see what time it is so you don't over sleep even though the alarm clock has been set.So that's exactly what happened. i didn't get a nap this afternoon because i have the tutorial, so i'm early to bed tonight.
