the color of the air right now
May. 3rd, 2004 08:25 pmi woke up tired this morning
and asked to stay in bed. Master said that was fine, so i slept until
7:30. i should have known the weather was going to change. It was windy
all day, and the website i use for weather said the high was 95. It was
sunny most all the day. But then about 3 this afternoon it started to
get dark. Not cloudy dark, sandy air dark. When we got ready to take
the dog out for his run, we closed up the apartment and turned on the
A/C, just in case.
We nearly made it to the desert. We could see the sand in the air. By
the time we got to the first desert mosque we had decided we weren't
going to walk, only the dog would get his run. By the time we got to
the second mosque we weren't sure the dog was going to get much of a
run. We turned camp arifjan and up the hill and were blinded by sand.
Think white out blizzard, only beige. It was the scariest ride i have
had in a long time. i could not see the front of my car. The sand was
beating against the window like a drum. Not as loud as hail hitting a
window, but more constant. It took us 20 minutes to drive a mile. We
couldn't go over about 2mph for fear of running off the road, or
running into another car.
Once we got turned around, it took another 30 minutes to drive out of
the storm. Max was about crazy. He knows the way to the desert and he
knew we were going home and he hadn't had his run yet. We got to the
city run place before the storm hit there. By 5:30 the storm was in
Fahaheel. i watched it come over the fish market and the fishing dock.
i watched fascinated as it came over the sea club and marina. Then i
watched as the beach across the street from me disappeared as well as
the school just north of us. A sand storm is an amazing thing to watch.
They are also terrible to clean up after. i have the blinds pulled and
the drapes shut and still there is a layer of dust over everything.
Even my teeth feel gritty.
