Sep. 13th, 2003 08:03 amMother and i had an ok trip to Hammond. We wanted to leave about 8 but by the time we'd gotten gas and gone to the bank it was 9 before we got on the road. The trip up was quiet and a bit tense. Neither of us said much. The scenery was beautiful and i enjoyed that part.
We got to Helen's and she was sleeping. Mother went in and woke her, Leo slept the whole time we were there. Mother and Helen had a nice chat. I felt a bit sad listening, they often talked about how they did not want to be old. Helen is Mother's cousin and 91, Mother is 77. They didn't talk about much else than their health. i wonder if we will see Helen again next year? She hopes not. She has emphysema and is pretty much confined to her apartment in an assisted living complex. She is on oxygen 24/7 and has a hose long enough that she can get to any part of the apartment without moving the nebulizer. Leo had a stroke and uses a walker to get around.
They are an odd couple. She and Leo were nearly engaged once. He had bought the ring, but had not had a chance to ask her. She got a new job and went out of the city. He never wrote to her or anything. She married another man, and had two sons. When Dean died, Leo found her again. He had never married. He gave her the ring and asked her to marry him. She did, i think she thought it was very romantic, but now she wishes she hadn't.
He was an accountant and bookkeeper all his life. He doesn't talk to her and they have nothing in common. She is a very wealthy woman and he is not in her league moneywise. She pays for everything but his medicines. She turned her assests over to her son and his first question was what is Leo doing for this partnership? Beginning in January, Leo has to start paying his fair share. Life takes such funny turns.
Gene, her son has quit working to take care of his money. He has a seat on the stock exchange. i don't know what the other qualifiers are for that, but i do expect it takes quite a bit of money. It's nice to know there are wealthy gene's in my family.
Today Daughter and i are going to the Cattle Congress. i love the cow show. She got two free tickets for her b'day. Tonight we have a dinner with her brother and his wife, and Onent and her husband, and Mother. After that, i believe my social obligations are over for the summer.
Maybe Monday after Mother's appointment in Waverly, Sis and i will sew.
