i spoke with the First Sergeant today in an Iowa National Guard Unit. We are going to have 15 soldiers for Christmas dinner. If i am lucky, one will be a neighbor boy from about 20 years ago. Whoa! i just did the math on that. That was a long time ago. My worry is that he may not even remember me. He surely won't know who i am from the name i gave the First Sergeant. i am so excited that we can do this. And dreading the amount of work it is going to take. i come from a small family, the biggest Christmas i can remember was maybe 12 people. Now i am planning a meal for perhaps 30. And i just keep telling people to come on over. i don't want the soldiers to be sad that they came to our house. i want them to have lots and lots of interesting people to talk with. One good thing i learned in Taiwan, a few more grains of rice make a dish go a long long way.

In January Max is going to school. Obedience school, that is. i wonder if i should buy him a back pack and a pencil case? We are going to visit the training center on Thursday, and we are talking about taking him there for Christmas day. He is not used to having so many people around. It will be easier on him, i think if he is away from the craziness. And we can see how he does there. We have to find a place to board him while we are in Germany, so this will be a good test run.

The other day on the way to the desert we saw a mallard and a white duck walking across the road. That sounds like the beginning of a joke, but it isn't. i have no idea where they came from, or where they were going. They weren't on the road when we came back. Now that i think about it, why were they even standing in the middle of the road, ducks fly, for heaven's sake.

For Jack: The research papers are in English. The faculty i teach in is an English medium faculty. English is the language of science and medicine. Our students are required to take at least 3 and sometimes 5 semesters of English to graduate. The course i teach is the last. We use research as the basis for an advanced reading and writing course.

Master is making a map for directions from Camp Arifjan to our place. The soldiers are all truck drivers. i hope they can find us. i hope the sun shines on December 25. He is making such a 'guy' map. i like mine better.

The semester is nearly over. It went by really fast. And, unlike most other years, i haven't been waiting for it to end. Usually semesters are about 3 weeks too long, but this year, not. Wonder what's up with that?

When we are in Germany my cousin is going to take us into the Czech Republic. To a place i have visited before. How cool is it to be able to say that? Mighty darned, i say. i think that is where i bought the crystal wine glasses. i gave one set to a friend in Taiwan as a small token for the use of her family's apartment in Taipei while i was making the TV program. i loved those glasses, and have always wondered how i could get more. Now i know. And i would like to get some more burgundy glasses too. And now i can.

The iron, the sandwich.
