I ventured out today, alone. The first time since the start of the war. This really isn't such an unusual thing. I'm a homebody, a nester. I like being in my home. It's lovely, has a great view, and I just plain like it. But today I felt a bit restless. And the cleaning woman came today too. I've never quite gotten over that puritan work ethic thing of feeling guilty while someone else does my work, so I left when Rani got here. I didn't do a dumb thing, but I sure felt uncomfortable. I don't know if it would have mattered if the situation were different or not. I went out and had a coffee and doughnut at the Hole-in-One doughnut shop. There were two Philippine waitresses, and four Arab men. I went in, bought my coffee and roll, and sat and read the paper. I was there for about 45 minutes I guess. I kept feeling as if I were being stared at. Dumb I know, but there you have it. And I know I was being watched as I took the tray to the waste bin and left. I don't think I'll be doing that again for a while.
Then I went to Alia and Ghalia Towers to a used book shop. Since I have so much unexpected time on my hands, I may as well increase my mind. Had to go through a checkpoint. There wasn't much traffic on the road so it didn't take long. I don't know what the police were expecting. There were at least 7 police cars taking care of one car per minute on average. Maybe less. I passed with no questions. But if they knew how I felt I'm sure they would have stopped me. I always feel guilty when I go through checkpoints. Again, dumb, I know. What can I say?
I had to go to the corner and make a U-turn. There is no easy way to get anywhere in this country. I live directly across the street from a beach, but if I wanted to drive there for a picnic it is a 5 km trip. Why would I want to drive you ask? Well, what if I wanted to have a chair to sit on, and a picnic basket with a cooler of iced tea? And then I'd need an umbrella to keep the sun off, and a basket for the lotion and sunglasses and the coolie for the tea glass. Oh, and a blanket to use as a table when I wanted to eat lunch. See? That's way too much stuff to carry across the street in one trip. And if I have to make more than two trips I'll be too tired to enjoy the view. I don't do it, anyway because I have a beautiful balcony and a gorgeous patio to sit on , same view, no sand fleas and a whole lot more privacy.
But I digress. I made the U-turn and as I was coming back up the other side of the street I saw an Indian woman I know. She cleans for me when Rani is gone. She was waiting for the bus. I went to the shop only to find it closed. Drat! I decided to do a good deed, and went down to the light and made another U-turn and then back through the checkpoint and to the next light and another U-turn and back to where Buspah was standing. The bus beat me, and I pulled up just as she was getting on the bus. That will teach me to try to do a good deed. Burned a quarter of a tank of gas and drove 3 km out of my way and I missed her.
I didn't want to go back home right away. I was feeling better, sort of like a kind on holiday from school. So I went to the pharmacy. Ah, life in the fast lane.
I came home and worked some. It's a bit difficult when the one you are collaborating with is out of the country, but we have no idea when classes will resume, I expect them to start up again next week, and this stuff has to be ready for the students. Tomorrow I will work on my class prep for the teacher whose class I am taking while she is gone.
When we had the dog out today I looked up and saw the remnants of an explosion. It was on the same plane as a C130 transport plane. I looked back and didn't see the C130 go down, so I have no idea what could have caused it. I would have thought that an explosion would be heard. Master says it could have been the APU of the plane may have had an explosion, sort of like what happens when a car engine floods and then finally starts. But He thought it looked too large a cloud for that. The other excitement is that there seems to be part of an airplane floating out in our little bay area by the beach across the street. At first I thought it was the floatable dock that goes from the shore to the old car ferry that is being remodeled for the passed year. Master got the binocs out to check it out. It appears to be a piece of metal or composite skin with insulation inside. I have no idea, where the British plane went down, but I wonder if this could be a part of that plane. Only conjecture at this time. The soldiers across the street weren't paying much attention to it, so probably it's the inside of a motor home that had been dumped in the gulf at the end of the winter camp season. Don't know when I will know for sure.
Daughter is with Mother now. Daughter's S.O. has been not well, and not getting any better. He refuses to go to the hospital, where he should be to get his meds regulated. His sons can't admit him because so far he is not a danger to himself. He isn't eating, and spends most of the day in bed. He isn't mean towards her or anything like that, he just isn't anything. I've been worried about her for a while, but she seemed to be holding up well. I've wanted to suggest she take a break but was afraid to make her nervous. Apparently she has had enough for awhile. I'm waiting now to talk to her at Mother's house. I hope nothing happened other than her patience came to an end to make her leave.
My sister and her husband went down to pick Daughter. Took her to the casino on the way home. She had some luck, won $38.00. For her a large amount. They also took her out to dinner. She needs some fun. I know Mother will treat her well, too, and Mother's cat will ignore her just like he ignores everyone but me.
